Eligibility & Requirements
Statement of Intent and C.V. A Statement of Intent describes your reason for pursuing a Certificate of Completion with the Art Students League. You are encouraged to include information about yourself, your objectives, and your interests that may not be immediately apparent from a review of your portfolio and application. A Curriculum Vitae or résumé details your art-related activities and accomplishments. Part two of the Statement of Intent requires you to discuss specific classes you might take and instructors with whom you wish to study. This section is meant for you to discuss who the League can help you further develop as an artist.
Artwork Portfolio Online artwork submission of 10 images (JPEG format) is required. It is advised that applicants select recent work relevant to their chosen area of concentration. The application requires three (3) drawings made from observation, four (4) to seven (7) artworks in the chosen area of concentration, up to three (0-3) artworks in areas other than the chosen concentration. Two optional submissions can be made for video or audio artworks.
Previous Studies
- Minimum educational level completion: Secondary school diploma or equivalent. A post-secondary degree or diploma is not required.
- Applicants to the four-year Certificate Program must demonstrate a minimum of one academic year (two semesters, or equivalent) of previous fine arts study in studio classes for drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking or mixed media.
- Applicants to the two-year Certificate Program must demonstrate a minimum of two academic school years (four semesters) of study from a post-secondary fine arts program.
Transcripts
- An Official Transcript is required to show your previous fine arts studies.
- A transcript from the Art Students League is acceptable and can be requested from the administration.
- Transcripts from other institutions must be sent by mail to the Art Students League of New York, 215 W 57th Street, New York, NY 10019, Attn: Thomas Tacik; or by electronic service to: tom@artstudentsleague.org.
References/Recommendations
Provide two (2) to three (3) letters of recommendation from non-relative individuals who are familiar with your development as an artist. Application Fee A non-refundable application fee of $50 is due upon submission.
International Students: Language Proficiency If you are an international student, a good working knowledge of English is required. TOEFL scores are not required. English proficiency is determined through interview by teleconference or in-person meeting.
International Students: Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) Issuance
- Students who require F-1 non-immigrant status in order to enroll must have an active SEVIS record at the time of matriculation or to be otherwise eligible for issuance of a Form I-20.
- To issue the Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility, The Art Students League of New York is required by U.S. federal regulations to review documentation demonstrating sufficient financial resources to cover tuition, fees, living expenses, and medical insurance for the length of the program. Please note that the issuance of the Form I-20 is separate from the Certificate Program admission decision.
- Form I-20 applications are reviewed when all required financial documentation has been submitted. If sufficient documentation is not provided, The Art Students League of New York will be unable to issue a Form I-20, and the applicant will not be able to enroll for the intended term.

Applying to the Certificate Program
Fall 2026 Application Deadlines:
- The Fall 2026 Semester begins September 8, 2026.
- Domestic 2-Year and 4-Year Certificate Program candidates, as well as international students currently in F1 status at other U.S. institutions who plan to transfer to the Art Students League, may submit the application no later than July 15, 2026. The application must be complete by this date with all supporting documents submitted. Incomplete applications may result in denial or deferred admission.
- International students who must obtain the Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility and apply for the F-1 visa are advised to submit this application no later than May 15, 2026, to begin the program in Fall 2026.
- International students currently at other U.S. institutions who plan to transfer to the Art Students League or new students who will be applying for the F-1 visa should contact the International & Certificate Student Services office as soon as possible by email: tom@artstudentsleague.org

The Art Students League of New York is delighted to offer this scholarship opportunity through the annual Merit Competition. Open to all current students and prospective new students working in the medium of watercolor, this award provides a tuition scholarship of $1,000 to be applied towards any watercolor painting class at the Art Students League of New York for the next Regular Session (September 2026-May 2027).
MERIT SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY

Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards Travel Grant
This grant is made possible through the generosity of the late Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards for travel and study in Spain.
$15,000 and full-time tuition for one class during the regular school year. In addition to the requirements listed above, the following details are specific to this grant:
- Open only to students whose focus is painting in any medium or style.
- Recipient of the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards Travel Grant must agree to travel to Spain and remain there for study in the field of painting for at least three (3) months, to begin using the grant prior to August 30, 2027. Recipients must also agree to send progress reports to the League.
- Recipient must submit a travel itinerary with budget, and a personal statement detailing what they plan to accomplish with the travel grant.
- Mandatory participation in the League's annual Scholarships & Grants Exhibition next year. Recipient is expected to produce artwork while in Europe, or related to the trip, for this exhibition.

Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant
This grant is made possible through the generosity of the late Edward G. McDowell for study and travel in Europe, to include a period of time in Paris.
Award of $10,000 and full-time tuition for one class during the regular school year. In addition to the general requirements, the following details are specific to this grant:
- Open to single (unmarried) students working in any medium or style. A notarized affidavit will be required of the recipient.
- The recipient of an Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant must agree to travel to Europe and remain there for study for at least two (2) months, to begin using the grant within 15 months. The recipient must also agree to send written progress reports to the League, including one report from Paris.
- Recipient must agree to submit a travel itinerary with budget, and a personal statement detailing what they plan to accomplish with the travel grant.

Bruce Dorfman Grant for Mixed Media & Assemblage
This award is made possible through the generosity of Ronald Strackbein.
$1,000 award of credit to the Art Students League Art Store and one full-time class for the regular school year. In addition to the requirements listed above, the following details are specific to this grant:
- Open only to students of Mixed Media and Assemblage.
- Artwork must be mixed media assemblage.
- Mandatory participation in the League's annual Scholarships & Grants Exhibition next year. Recipient is expected to produce artwork for this exhibition while on scholarship.

- Artworks in multiple panels (diptych, triptych) must be submitted as single image files.

The Art Students League of New York is delighted to offer Grant opportunities through the annual Merit Competition. Unless otherwise stated, Grants include a cash award plus tuition for one full-time class for the next Regular Session (September 2026-May 2027) and are open only to League members.

- At the time of application candidates must have completed a minimum of 1,120 cumulative class hours (full-time and/or part-time, excluding workshops), of which 420 class hours must be in the current Regular Session (September 2025 – May 2026). - Past recipients of this grant category may not reapply but may apply for other grants (based on eligibility).
- International students must have the appropriate visa status allowing full-time study at the time of application and for the 2026/27 Regular Session.
- Temporary international visitors to the United States, regardless of membership status, are not eligible for the grants competition.
- If an applicant is found to be ineligible based on any of the above criteria, the application will not be reviewed.
Kuniyoshi Award for Printmaking
This award is made possible through the generosity of the Sara and Yasuo Kuniyoshi Foundation.
Awards of $7,500 and full-time tuition for one printmaking class during the regular school year. In addition to the requirements listed above, the following details are specific to this grant:
- This grant is awarded to students of printmaking in any style or genre.
- If eligible a student may apply for both awards but may receive only one Kuniyoshi Award.
- Past printmaking recipients of the Nessa Cohen Grant or the Will Barnet Grant are not eligible for the printmaking award.
- Mandatory participation in the League's annual Scholarships & Grants Exhibition next year. Recipient is expected to produce artwork for this exhibition while on scholarship.

Nessa Cohen Grant
Made possible through the generosity of the late Nessa Cohen, this grant is provided for the purpose of furthering recipients’ interests and abilities in their chosen areas of study and to assist students of proven proficiency to transition to a more professional status.
$5,000 and full-time tuition for one class during the regular school year. In addition to the requirements listed above, the following details are specific to this grant:
- Open only to students of sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and watercolor
- Students who have won this grant twice are no longer eligible
- Mandatory participation in the League's annual Scholarships & Grants Exhibition next year. Recipient is expected to produce artwork for this exhibition while on scholarship.

This award is made possible through the generosity of the estate of Sally Grant Morse.
$3,000 and full-time tuition for one class during the regular school year. In addition to the requirements listed above, the following details are specific to this grant:
- Open only to students of traditional representational sculpture originally executed in clay.
- Past double-recipients of the Nessa Cohen Grant and past recipients of the Bassen Grant or Lucchesi Grant are not eligible for this award.
- Mandatory participation in the League's annual Scholarships & Grants Exhibition next year. Recipient is expected to produce artwork for this exhibition while on scholarship.
